Water Tight & Sun Protected
Sun Frog PERFORMANCE PEAK EXTERIOR WOOD FINISH - BASE COAT is a premium blend of natural drying oils, transparent oxide ultraviolet (UV) absorbing tonal pigments, additional UV absorbers and stabilizers, penetration assisting thinning solvents, and a fungicide to inhibit mold growth on the finish. Its combination produces a top quality, penetrating, stabilizing sealer/finish to buffer wood from the effects of exterior weather while aesthetically enhancing its appearance. It can be used for horizontal surfaces (e.g. decking, but for price and ease of more frequently required reuse consider using Sun Frog Deck Sealer instead) but is especially formulated for high value vertical rough sawn woods (siding, shingles, fences, etc.), vertical smooth sawn surfaces (garage and entryway exterior wood doors, etc.), exterior log home surfaces and outdoor wood furniture where a top-quality, through-dry, resin with a manimum durability is desired.
It is a penetrating foundation finish for Sun Frog PERFORMANCE PEAK EXTERIOR WOOD FINISH - TOP COAT, achieving in combination (BASE COAT then TOP COAT) a durable, exterior film buildsystem. When properly applied, Sun Frog BASE COAT alone should provide two to five years of protective service, depending on quantity penetrating the wood, weather conditions, customer aesthetic standards and whether BASE COAT has been applied to horizontal (shorter life expectancy) or vertical exterior surfaces (longer life expectancy). Actual life expectancy depends on wear conditions, sun, water and snow exposure levels, type of wood and personal aesthetic preferences of owner. As with Sun Frog’s other oil based products, BASE COAT is available in Clear plus Transparent Cedar (gold-red), Redwood (reddish) and Mahogany (red-brown) Tones, with the “Toned” versions providing the most UV resistance due to higher pigment protection levels. BASE COAT in Clear can be tinted to form semitransparent colors using oil-compatible pigments available from professional paint stores (see warranty disclaimer if tinted). Unfortunately, we are unable to ship this product out of the United States. USES AND BENEFITS:
A Material Safety Data Sheet is available for Peak Performance Base Coat using Adobe Acrobat. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat, it is available free of charge by clicking the link below. APPLICATION:Apply only to clean, open and dry exterior wood. BASE COAT IS NOT FOR APPLICATION OVER EXISTING PAINTS, STAINS OR VARNISH-LIKE FINISHES. Unless kiln dried, new wood (“green lumber”) should be allowed to air dry for approximately thirty days of reasonably dry weather prior to application. Moisture content should be 18% or less when BASE COAT is applied. On older woods, before applying first remove existing dirt, mildew and prior sealers, finishes, stains or paints (use Sun Frog Deck Cleaner or Deck Stripper), then renew wood color (use Sun Frog Born Again) and allow wood to re-dry. Apply when temperature is between 50º F and 90º F. For best results, use a brush, apply evenly and work in to promote penetration. Apply as much product as the wood will absorb, leaving a slight wet excess to continue soaking in. If sprayed, wear respiratory protection and back-brush, back-pad or back-roll to provide strong work-in action (brushing is always best). If NOT BEING TOP COATED WITH Sun Frog PERFORMANCE PEAK- TOP COAT, a light second coat of BASE COAT, similarly applied, is advised and is best applied within 2 hours of the first coat (within one hour on horizontal surfaces like decks). If used on horizontal or smooth sawn surfaces, any puddles or surface excess existing after two hours of dry time should be wiped up with cloth towels or rags (Rule: “What doesn’t get in, get off”). DO NOT APPLY IF RAIN OR SIGNIFICANT CONDENSATION IS EXPECTED DURING INITIAL 24 HOUR DRY PERIOD. Clean up brushes and implements soon after use with paint thinner or warm, soapy water. COVERAGE (sq ft / gal): Expect coverage of 125 to 150 square feet per gallon on older or rough sawn woods; 150 to 225 on new or smooth sawn wood or logs. Apply as much as BASE COAT as wood will absorb for longest lasting service. CAUTIONS: Contains petroleum distillate. Care should be used when applying. Do not breathe vapors or mists. If sprayed, a NIOSH approved respirator should be used. See cautions and instructions on product label before using product. CAUTIONS: SPONTANEUOUS COMBUSTION OF OILY RAGS DUE TO THE RELEASE OF HEAT BY THE OXIDATION OF DRYING OILS WILL OCCUR. Any oily rags not actively being used should be immersed in water, sealed in a plastic, airtight bag and stored in a sealed metal container away from all structures and other burnable materials. Dispose of in accordance with local regulations. PACKAGING: One-Gallon and Five-Gallon Pails
