August "Augie" Vanderveen
NorthernHeatherCo is the work of August "Augie" Vanderveen, a Grand Rapids–based screen printer designing apparel for people who actually live in Michigan. Working out of a converted carriage house with a 4-color manual press, Augie draws everything by hand before bringing it to fabric — pencil to brush pen to scanner to spot-color separations. The work draws from 1970s state-park souvenir merch, Hatch Show Print letterpress, and the kind of badge-logic graphic design that ages well on a heather tri-blend. Expect mittens, freighters, brook trout, white pines, and dry regional humor. Two peninsulas. Three colors max. No mascots.
