Design Interpretation

This design combines retro typography with cartographic silhouettes to address the systemic erasure of Indigenous history. By highlighting Lake Ontario (derived from the Huron word Ontarí'io) and the Gulf of Mexico (derived from the Nahuatl word Mēxihco), the artwork advocates for the acknowledgment of original indigenous place names, aligning with the contemporary decolonization and Land Back movements. The earth-toned color palette and distressed texture evoke a vintage, educational aesthetic.
